Welcome to Swim Chi

Welcome to the official website of Swim Chi. Swim Chi is a training and exercise technique that uses the principles of Tai Chi to improve swimming, in particular crawl (aka freestyle). It consists of land-based exercises, along with guidance for taking to the water.

Swim Chi can improve your swimming, make it more enjoyable and extend your swimming aspirations.

Additionally, Swim Chi brings benefits as an exercise in its own right, drawing on the centuries old Chinese tradition of Tai Chi.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM SWIM CHI?

Swim Chi can benefit all swimmers. It was initially created to help people who have learnt to swim in later life i.e. not childhood, and are looking to start swimming crawl, or to improve. As a comprehensive exercise system incorporating the principles of Tai Chi, it can benefit many different groups by improving mindfulness and new ways of understanding your swimming.

– Basic Swimmers

Can swim enough to enjoy the water, mainly breast stroke having never really swam crawl, or may be new to swimming. Swim Chi will provide this group:

  • Confidence to try freestyle and make progress practising out of the pool
  • Development of a good technique from the outset
  • Mindfulness of their bodies and swimming
  • A way to cope with the complexity of initially attempting crawl

– Intermediate Swimmers

Can swim crawl, but only a few lengths, which can be hard work. They find it easier swimming breast stroke. As well as the above benefits, Swim Chi will provide this group:

  • Better understanding of their technique
  • Ability to focus on specific elements of their swimming
  • A structure for remembering and applying the elements of good technique
  • Applications to improve their pool practice and training

– Advanced Swimmers

Are happy swimming crawl, and can swim for long periods, but would like to improve. They can probably swim a mile (64 lengths of 25m pool) in under 32 minutes, some by a fair margin. As well as the above benefits, Swim Chi will provide this group:

  • How to identify weaker elements of their stroke and how to address them
  • A new way of analysing their technique leading to a deeper understanding
  • An inner connectedness to their stroke, improving efficiency
  • Increased mindfulness of their bodies and swimming

– Elite Swimmers

Probably swam with a club or squad during childhood, or have dedicated significant time to their swimming, along with quality coaching. Swim Chi is not a replacement for this level of coaching and swimming. However, it can still provide the above benefits for the swimmer interested in expanding their outlook on swimming, alternative training techniques, creating and deepening their own mindfulness of their swimming, and an insight into Tai Chi.
